            Crimes Of War

It is April of the year 1945, the last days of the Second World War. Berlin is under siege, and the empire of the Third Reich is crumbling down. Hitler is hiding in his Führerbunker, knowing full well that he has found himself in a hopeless situation. The highest ranking SS officers decide to execute a very risky plan. The most important personas of the Third Reich are to be evacuated before the Soviet flag is mounted on the Reichstag. The resistance learns of this plan...

            General Features

            • Use one of the many available vehicles and attack the enemy with even greater force
            • Cooperate with the resistance movement in order to overcome the Germans
            • Use the many varied weapons, such as the Luger Parabellum, the Tommy Gun and the MG-42
            • Fight in ruined cities, factories and offices of the Third Reich on the verge of its collapse.

            Minimum Requirements

            • Windows XP
              Processor 2.4 Ghz

Adventure of the Week Journey to the Center of the Earth 1978

Im a little bit busy this week, so for the sake of tight deadlines, were tackling another Greg Hassett adventure for the TRS-80 -- Journey to the Center of the Earth, published in 1978, which I believe is his second published game after Enchanted Island.  No publisher is credited, but its likely this one was released by Mad Hatter Software or Hassetts own Adventure World; it was also published in type-in form in 1981, in Bob Liddils Captain 80 Book of BASIC Adventures, and also appeared on the Commodore 64 a few years later.

Hassetts style was still developing -- he was only twelve or thirteen years old at the time -- and so we see that spelling and grammar are again an issue, and the map is rather loosely and randomly constructed.  If we die, the program just ends; theres no opportunity to retry.  And the BASIC-language parser is surprisingly fast, but limited -- for instance, INV and INVENT dont work, we must spell out INVENTORY, and some words are very situation-specific, requiring a fair amount of guessing.  The name borrows from Jules Vernes classic novel, but like Hassetts later The House of Seven Gables, the game is a treasure hunt that borrows the basic concept but otherwise bears no substantial resemblance to the book.

I always urge interested readers to try these games out before proceeding here; Journey to the Center of the Earth is not a particularly difficult game to finish, though the map is fairly large and its not always obvious which items are score-worthy treasures and which are just items.  As usual, I will be giving away most of the puzzle and plot details as I encountered them, so as you proceed beyond this point, be advised there are...

            ***** SPOILERS AHEAD! *****

The game begins by prompting "WHAT IS YOUR NAME?"  -- I went with GUYBRUSH -- but I never saw the game make use of this information; it seems to be an unfinished idea, and does not appear in Hassetts other games.  I can only speculate that this is here to confuse the player with a later "WHO GOES THERE?" puzzle -- our entry here is not useful as a password.

We begin in a ship with nothing in inventory, apparently arriving at the center of the Earth rather woefully undersupplied.  This adventure wont be too serious in tone, as the ships computer screen reads: SHIP WILL NOT FUNCTION -- FRIBULATING GONKULATOR IS BURNED OUT.  So presumably we will to have to get it refribulated so it can gonkulate, or gonkulate it for the sake of fribulation.

North of the ship, we suddenly find ourselves in a COBBLESTONE HALLWAY, with a chirping that reportedly SOUNDS LIKE BUGS.  Further north is a room with rubies in its walls, and theres a LARGE RUBY we can take.   But GADZOOKS!!! A GAINT [sic] BUG JUST WALKED IN TO KILL ME!  Hassetts early games never felt bad about telegraphing a creatures intentions... and whoops, maybe Im misunderstanding and thats not a misspelling, as shortly IM BEING DEVOURED BY A GAINT BUG!!  And then IM DYING...DYING...DEAD, in rather an overdramatic (not to say impossibly uttered) manner.

So we dont want to run into any Gaint Bugs, at least not yet.  But they show up randomly, and all over the place, so were going to have to figure out a solution before too long.

Over to the west is A ROOM WITH MANY ANIMALS... until WAIT! THEYVE ALL RAN [sic] AWAY.  All that remains is A PARROT IN A CAGE.  We cant GET CAGE or OPEN CAGE, as its not a recognized noun, but we can GET PARROT and the cage comes along.

South of the ship is a DUSTY PLACE containing A SET OF KEYS.  Past this, as the topography becomes increasingly random, we find A HUGE ICE CAVERN, leading to A ROOM WITH TRACES OF SLIME ON THE FLOORS AND WALLS.

The slime room leads to ALS DINER, apparently of unlicensed Happy Days fame, where theres a COKE MACHINE, joyfully and explicitly unlicensed with an ENJOY COCA-COLA banner.  Presumably we will need a quarter to avail ourselves of its carbonated bounty.  Theres also some FOOD here.  I never found a need to eat or drink in-game, though the game will let us imbibe and consume these, or try to feed various creatures.

South of the slime room is the source of the slime - the HYDRA ROOM, occupied by a nine-headed hydra.  It blocks our way south and west, but we can explore a TORTURE CHAMBER to the east (where THERE IS [sic] SOME HUMAN SKELETONS and a giant bug asleep.)  Trying to KILL BUG indicates that I CANT KILL ANYTHING. IM TOO WEAK. BUT MAYBE IF YOU WERE A BIT MORE SPECIFIC... though this actually a lie, as the game will let us KILL things in the right context.

The HUGE PIT west of the slime room contains a quarter and a cigarette lighter.  We cant BUY COKE, but we can INSERT QUARTER to get a bottle back at Als Diner.  We cant SHAKE COKE or SPRAY COKE or even OPEN COKE, so thats not going to be a novel attack.

A SMALL ROOM west of our starting point contains a GOLD NUGGET, and a scribbling reading HAR HAR HAR! YOULL NEVER MAKE IT! >> ARBADAC ARBA.  A 35,000 CARAT DIAMOND (could a human being actually lift that? We can carry it, anyway) lies in a low crawl space south of this room, and going east from that room leads into the traditional MAZE OF TWISTY LITTLE PASSAGES a la the classic Colossal Cave Adventure.  The maze contains a MAGIC WAND.

One exit from the maze leads back to the ruby room -- and with no giant bug about at the moment, we can go north to find ourselves IN A DARK ROOM.  And I THINK I HEAR GRUNTS AND GROANS NEARBY.  Ahem... I never found out what this was referring to, and thats probably a good thing.  East of this area is another maze.

North of the dark room is the SOUTH SIDE OF A CHASM, and a SHINY SWORD, with molten lava below.   The game keeps us from walking blithely into the molten lava, but we will probably want to find a way across.

We seem to score 10 or 15 points per treasure, out of a maximum of 175, but they do vary.  We have to drop them in the ship to earn points, otherwise we remain at 0 with a BOY, YOU STINK! assessment from Mr. Hassett.

Hassetts mazes are usually pretty straightforward -- each room generally has multiple exits that lead back to the same place, with one that goes to a new area and one (usually) that goes back to a previous one, so they are not hard to map using the traditional item-drop method.

The "secret passage" maze leads to THE TROLLS PALACE, with gold bars and a diamond necklace. With 5 treasures claimed, I have 80 of 175 points.  I am hoping the sword will help deal with the hydra or any giant bugs I encounter, but in a dark room where THERE ARE GIANT [sc!] BUGS ALL AROUND ME! we still cant KILL them, though at least we can just exit the room without being harassed or killed.

Ah, yes, when a giant bug arrives specifically to kill us, we can use the sword to KILL BUG -- DING! DONG! THE BUG IS DEAD, THE BUG IS DEAD!!!  Several of the authors works contained Wizard of Oz references.

How can we cross the lava chasm?  POUR COKE and OPEN COKE and THROW BOTTLE dont do anything -- not that I should have realistically expected a cold soda to cool down molten lava.  But we can WAVE WAND to magically transport ourselves to the north side of the chasm.  It leads to a wooden platform and a sign warning us about the rickety wooden bridge, but we can ignore the sign and travel to the TROLLS PLACE. (Which turns out -- [sic] -- to be the Trolls Palace again, but by a different entrance and with more resistance from the resident troll, who throws an axe at us if we try to enter without dealing with him.)

The axe-throwing troll is another homage to the classic Crowther/Woods adventure, but his axe is consistently fatal, so we dont want this to happen.  We cant answer the Trolls "WHO DARES TO ENTER MY PALACE???", it seems, nor can we KILL TROLL or exit the room without being killed by his axe.  So is this a red herring?  Are we just supposed to get into the palace via the maze?

What about the hydra?  We can FEED HYDRA, which turns him into A GIANT HYDRA RUBBING HIS STOMACH, but he still wont let us past.  HELP is actually helpful here, suggesting CIGAR? CIGARETTE? TIPPARILLO [sic]?  We cant USE LIGHTER or LIGHT LIGHTER, but we can BURN HYDRA and THE HYDRA CRUMBLES TO THE GROUND DEAD.  With this surprisingly flammable creature dispatched, we can get an emerald from the CLAM ROOM and a MING VASE from the DRAGON ROOM.  Weve got 7 treasures and 105 points now.

Past the Dragon Room, we can get some silver bars in a MAMMOTH GARDEN.  The VELVET ROOM contains some tools (not described further and treated as a set).  Theres a TREASURE ROOM where MANY DWARVES GUARD SOME PRETTY SCRAWNY TREASURE thats not further described and cannot be obtained, and an ARABIAN ROOM with an oil slick, in a bit of 1970s pop culture xenostereotyping.  But we cant BURN SLICK, as oddly enough IT DOESNT BURN.

The oil slick is meant to be a hint leading us south to MACS EARTHDIGGER BODY SHOP, which contains a new fribulating gronkulator!  This is a little clearer now -- we are near the center of the earth because our "ship" is a digging contraption of some kind.  But we cant GET FRIBULATING GONKULATOR because the parser doesnt recognize any variant of it???  We have tools, so maybe we can FIX FROBULATING GONKULATOR... but I CANT.   Oh, wait, I have been mistyping, calling it a GRONKULATOR [mic] instead of a GONKULATOR!  We can GET GONKULATOR.

Now can we install it in the ship?  We cant REPLACE or INSTALL it; if we try to FIX it here, the parser says I THINK I HAVE TO DROP IT FIRST, but DROP GONKULATOR doesnt work?  Ack, I keep typing GRONKULATOR!

And as soon as we DROP and then FIX GONKULATOR, the game is over!?!  I am 5 points short, though, with 170 of the 175 points, so lets see what Ive missed.

Aha!  If we return to the dangerous TROLLS PALACE entrance with the parrot in hand, the parrot chants, "SIR ALEXANDER...SIR ALEXANDER!"  But SAY SIR ALEXANDER doesnt solve the problem?  A simple SIR ALEXANDER works, and THE TROLL SCURRIES AWAY IN FEAR without tossing an axe in our direction.  But this is just another way into the Trolls Palace, where we have already been, and we dont get any points for doing it.

I had to look at the BASIC code to see that DROP PARROT at the climax counts as a 5-point treasure, earning us the rank of ADVENTURER GRANDMASTER:

Hooray!  Were the Adventurer Grandmaster of Adventurerdom!

Im getting close to exhausting Mr. Hassetts sizeable body of work, but there are still a couple of his games I havent tackled.  Well get around to them in due course, I am sure; somehow I missed the existence of his games back in the TRS-80 era, so Ive been enjoying discovering them, three decades later.

            Castlevania Symphony of the Night

            The Short

            Pros
            - Reinvented Castlevania by taking the aesthetic and mixing it with Metroid-style exploration
            - Single-handedly invented the "Metroidvania" (or "Castletroid" if youre a tool) genre
            - RPG elements including leveling, gear, and currency all play a role in this new style
            - Fantastic 2D art mixed with some 2D and 3D backdrops make the game look good
            - Music is absolutely some of the best in the series with almost all new tracks
            - Long adventure, with the "inverse castle" twist still crazy
            - First game to introduce Ayami Kojimas fantastic gothic artwork for the series
            - Buttload of secrets, including fighting game-style magic combos
            - Can be a genuine challenge if you play with the "max luck, low everything else" code, which makes the game as hard as the old-school Castlevanias (aka the best way to play SOTN)
            - "WHAT IS A MAN?!"

            Cons
            - Game balance in terms of difficulty is all over the place.
            - That being said, 99% of the game is pretty easy, the exception being a few bosses
            - These said bosses you pretty much have to cheese using the broken and op items (the sword dropped in the inverse library or the Shield Rod + Alucard Shield combo)
            - Recycles a lot of assets from Rondo of Blood from the CD Engine.
            - Marked the official end of linear style Castlevania games, which is too bad
            - Spawned roughly eight trillion modern day indie (and commercial) games that knocked off the games formula
            - Inverse castle is basically just a hard-mode straight shot, without any story and just one song for the whole area (what is up with that?)
            - PSP re-release re-dubbed and retranslated all the lines. They arent much better, but the corniness is gone, so thats a con.

Dracula: Expert on men and what they are.

            The Long

Symphony of the Night was NOT the first Metroidvania game I ever played. That reward goes to Circle of the Moon, though I beat Aria of Sorrow first. I just figured Id toss that out there just so you know I play games in totally the wrong order, and thats ok.

Anyway, everybodys heard the story, whether or not its true. Koji Igarashi went to Sony to say that they wanted to make not a 3D, but a 2D Castlevania game on their new Playstation system. Sony told him to suck it up and make it 3D, because 3D was the future. Then Koji went to Konami, and Konami said "No 2D Castlevania, no Metal Gear Solid," so Sony relented. Then the game actually sold pretty badly on release and only really picked up after gaining a cult following a few years down the road (enough to get it "Greatest Hits" status, at least).

I think this story is totally fake, but it does prove a point: game developers know what is good for their series. Most of the time. If you look at Symphony of the Night and compare it to the "modern" 3D Castlevania 64, its pretty clear that Sony got the way better deal out of this.

Nintendo really should have looked into that "Blast Processing" tech when it had the chance.

Anyway, the game is pretty much a legend at this point, because it spawned the genre that Castlevania stuck pretty rigidly too in regards to its handheld iterations for over a decade. It wasnt until Lords of Shadow had to show up and ruin everything that our 2D Castlevanias were squarely in the "Metroidvania" category of game design.

But lets say you know nothing about this nonsense Im spouting, and need a full rundown. Is this game good? Has it aged well? Is it worth playing on its re-release on every gaming system ever? Well...probably. I guess. Heres a review anyway.

            Thats using your head.

Story-wise, its the same old nonsense, though it does present it in an interesting way. The game actually starts on the last level of Rondo of Blood (complete with its level intro graphic, though it calls the stage "Bloodlines," which is in fact the first stage in Rondo of Blood. Come on, Konami, Im just a huge nerd, I didnt even design the game and I noticed this!), where you as Rictor Belmont bust into Draculas joint and whip him good. Following which you get a massive text crawl explaining Rictor is missing, and Draculas son Alucard (last seen in Castlevania III: True Blood) is off to punch him in the face and blow up his castle.

So you play as Alucard instead of a whipping Belmont. This isnt the first time weve mixed it up (Bloodlines didnt have a Belmont, and it had a dude with a whip and a dude with a spear), but the fact there are no whips at all until after you beat the game and enter an unlock to play as Rictor is pretty unique.

Anyway, the storys simple. Rictors lost his marbles and thinks hes the king of Castlevania, and his sister Maria (who has gone from being a tiny girl to an actual woman) wants Alucard to beat some sense into him. The game does have different endings (based on if you kill Rictor or bring him to his senses, which unlocks a buttload more game to play) which is neat, but the story is hardly worth mentioning.

Minus the atrocious script and god-awful voice acting. Its so bad its downright lovely. Seriously, I really, really dig this games atrocious voice actors. They werent even trying.

            You tell em, Rictor.

No, the biggest change is this is not a linear, straight shot Castlevania game. Instead, you as Alucard are tasked to explore the entirety of the castle, gaining power-ups and items that allow you to access further and deeper portions in your quest to find the princess. Wait, thats Mario. Whatever.

If that sounds like Metroid, then youre both right and have reading comprehension, because I only mentioned that like fifteen times already. The map screen? Ripped from Metroid. Power ups like double jump to get to new areas? Metroid. It does have a few super cool changes, like Alucard can change into a sprinting dog, form of mist to pass through grates and other small areas, and a bat that can fly, all of which unlock new areas to further your exploration. Its cool, and you can see how they took the Metroid formula, flavored it up with some Castlevania style, and it ended up alright.

The main difference is this isnt a game that you can speed run, nor one that is based on skill like Metroid or the earlier Castlevanias. While, yes, some skill is required for the bosses, the game actually has a level-up system, similar to Simons Quest. Sort of. Only not at all. I just thought Id drop that comparison for some reason.

You get XP and level, learn spells by inputting fighting game-style combo moves, find new weapons and armor and equip them, all in a 2D platforming sense. This isnt the first time this has been done (one could argue Zelda 2 did it a billion years before), but it actually feels...well, good. While skill can technically be replaced with level grinding and number crunching, its still very satisfying to get that 3D "Level Up!" text and have Alucard glow all crazy. Mixing RPG elements with Metroid exploration was, frankly, brilliant, and it shows because they kept using it for future games.

The combination of 2D and 3D in the backgrounds makes this game gorgeous.

All is not perfect in Symphony of the Night, however. While the equips and level up system are nice, theyre also a bit simple. In fact, the whole game feels a bit dumbed down. Focus isnt really on the enemies or the challenge, the meticulous platforming and merciless bosses. Instead its about exploration and the adventure of finding every secret and rotting in every nook and cranny the castle has to offer. Is this bad? No, not really. But it is quite different from other Castlevania games in nearly every regard. As well as much, much easier.

While one can argue the second or inverse castle offers the real challenge (and it does), the whole first half of the game is an absolute cakewalk. This is mostly because Alucard, unlike his Belmont buddies in earlier games, controls like a dream. He slides gracefully with way too many frames of animation across the screen, can change his direction mid-air, can easily morph into any animal or form he wants, and has a quick-dash to get him out of sticky situations (or just slide across the floor for fun in reverse). Much like Super Castlevania IV, the game didnt really scale its difficulty for all these new abilities, meaning if you even have a basic grasp of how to play a 2D platformer youll stomp your way through this game in no time. Minus the few secret bosses that you have to cheese to beat with the absolutely broken "ultra" weapons. Balance is thrown out the window pretty quickly in, and it just keeps blasting out of control from there. You could be murdering things without even trying, take a wrong turn, and die in two hits. Its a bit like a massive mixed bag of imbalance.

That looks like a good place to go.

What isnt a giant mixed bag of imbalance is the graphics and music. Ill say I think this is one of the best looking and sounding PS1 games out there, and certainly the best 2D one. The pixel art is phenomenal and gothic, with the backgrounds often hybridizing 2D and 3D elements to make it feel both modern and retro. As mentioned, Alucard has way too many frames of pixelated animation to be legal, and the enemies all look phenomenal, from the huge bosses to the tiny skeletons.

The music is also absolutely rocking, so much so I actually imported the soundtrack. The opening song (which I will embed below) is probably one of my favorite intro songs in a game to date, with all the rest being just as fantastic. I really only have two gripes: the absence of any "classic" Castlevania tunes (Bloody Tears, Vampire Hunter, etc.) and the fact that the inverted castle uses the same song for 90% of it. Seriously? And it isnt even that great of a song compared to the rest. Come on, guys.

            Now thats rockin.

Symphony of the Night is difficult to review, mostly because of my immense love for the linear Castlevania games. That being said, I absolutely fell in love with the game after I first played it, and even to this day I often revisit the game and rebeat it, both with Alucard and the unlocked Rictor. While it does have some serious balance problems, and most skill is easily replaced by grinding or just knowing where the broken items are, Symphony of the Night remains a complete and wholly decent adventure into Draculas lair. While I honestly wouldnt rank it up as high on my favorites as the best 2D linear Castlevania games, I can say it is still one of my favorites in the series, and highly recommend you get the re-release on PS3 or Xbox 360 if you havent already.

A new direction, a new style for Castlevania, and a hundred indie game creators rejoice. Finally, something they can overuse now that theyve ground duel-stick shooters into the ground.
            Four out of five stars.

What is going on here I dont even know.
